Il fut lui-m\u00eame, en 1989, meilleur sommelier du monde de l\u2019Association de la sommellerie internationale (ASI), qui lui a ainsi attribu\u00e9 son prix, pour l\u2019ensemble de sa carri\u00e8re. Auparavant, il avait gravi tous les \u00e9chelons des concours r\u00e9serv\u00e9s \u00e0 la profession\u00a0: champion de France 1983, puis d\u2019Europe en 1988.<\/p>\n<p>Parmi les candidats \u00e0 ce premier troph\u00e9e, figuraient le fondateur du Concours mondial de Bruxelles, <strong>Louis Havaux<\/strong>, et la Canadienne <strong>V\u00e9ronique Rivest<\/strong>. Cette derni\u00e8re, \u00e0 Tokyo, s\u2019\u00e9tait inclin\u00e9e derri\u00e8re <strong>Paolo Basso<\/strong>, qui fut le successeur de G\u00e9rard Basset, en 2013, \u00e0 Tokyo. L\u2019Italo-suisse a lui aussi gravi tous les \u00e9chelons, meilleur sommelier de Suisse en 1997, meilleur sommelier d\u2019Europe en 2010, puis du monde, en 2013.<\/p>\n<p>La RTS vient de diffuser un int\u00e9ressant portrait de <strong>Paolo Basso<\/strong> dans l\u2019\u00e9mission <em>Mise au point<\/em>, o\u00f9, en italien, du Ch\u00e2teau Mouton-Rothschild \u00e0 son commerce familial, il \u00e9voque le quotidien d\u2019un sommelier de haut vol, entre ch\u00e2teaux et mandats prestigieux et enseignement \u00e0 l\u2019Ecole h\u00f4teli\u00e8re de Glion. Le reportage, en italien, livre davantage sur sa personnalit\u00e9 que d\u2019autres interviews en fran\u00e7ais, langue qu\u2019il ma\u00eetrise pourtant parfaitement, puisqu\u2019il a travaill\u00e9 dans ses premi\u00e8res ann\u00e9es dans des restaurants \u00e0 Montana et \u00e0 Cully.
